As Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement in Research Lead at UHB, Margaret supports staff to do high quality patient involvement in their research. Margaret also works closely with PPI leads within the local NIHR infrastructure at UHB, helping to raise awareness of national standards and best practice, and develop training for both researchers and the public about Patient and Public Involvement in Research.
Margaret began her career as a Physics teacher in secondary schools, before retraining as a medical physicist at UHB. This was followed by a PhD and a fellowship investigating the use of breath biomarkers for disease diagnosis, particularly in liver disease.
Her patient involvement and advocacy experience is in Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), which she experienced during pregnancy. She has been a volunteer of the charity Pregnancy Sickness Support (PSS) since 2011, and a trustee since 2014. She conducts, publishes and has presented patient-led research on women’s experiences of HG. She has co-authored clinical practice guidelines for management of HG, and is also a steering committee member for the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership for HG as well as a patient advisor on the NIHR HTA funded trial, EmPOWER.
