MD-TEC: Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre Announced

University Hospitals Birmingham have announced the award of £3.5 million European Regional Development Funding to develop a new Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC). Combined with matched funding from University of Birmingham and Aston University, this will total £7 million. MD-TEC will support small-medium life sciences businesses by providing services that are currently absent in the region. This will include cutting-edge research in biomaterials development and simulation-based medical device testing.

The MD-TEC is now live as of January 2017 and laboratory development will be completed by August 2017. Liam Grover, Professor in Biomaterials Science at the University of Birmingham, will lead biomaterials development and Dr Tom Clutton-Brock, Clinical Director, NIHR Trauma Management Healthcare Technology Cooperative and Deputy Director of the ITM, will lead medical device usability and safety testing.
